Hey folks, Niki here in Slidell, La. Ann, Holly, Ken, Justin and I have just completed the work on the second house on the bayou. I should say we have finished gutting and sanitizing (de molding if you will) We are putting the upper cabinets back and rebuilding the kitchen counter as well as the bathroom counter. Patrick with plenty is coming down with a new(used) stove with an oven that works. We will set the rebuilt one in Meg's House-that is the green home we are working! on. Meg and the Frieda Kids started the gutting there so we thought we would name the house after Megan Perry. The fire place is one that heats two rooms and it is in good order-do we ever have plenty of wood here to burn...... We have space for 15 +cots in the adjacent rooms. The Kitchen is a cozy room for community space. We are still waiting on the tent from Biloxi, problems with weather. But you know everything seems to be happening when it is supposed to and so we know it will get here when it is time.
Justin, my son, went home yesterday. As with most folks who have come down, this was a great experience for him and for that I am very grateful as is he...
We went to Pass Christian yesterday and met Lee as "It's a Walk in the Park" distribution site. Named after the Park they are set up in. We met 2 ladies there who have been working there since the storm. Their homes and rental properties were hard hit. Both of these women are trying to get the places together again and are holding them for the renters that were there before the storm-bravo to them. But we need help-----We need more folks down here---that is s18 homes we need to help get back so these families can come home!! Keep writing to your local papers, good friends, Don't give up on letting people know how important it is to get families home from where ever they are.....Its cold here, my friends, and families are still living in tents or homes that have been gutted but have no heat. Propane is the heat a big heating source . We need blankets, heaters and hands---lots of hand wailing to work in the cold.
We are working on a project to place volunteers in schools and nursing homes to help with the loss of personnel. Folks who feel comfortable with being a teachers aid or to read to the elderly that kind of thing...There is so much to do, it just baffles me that our Gov. will send money to destroy other countries and lives such as in Iraq-when it would be better spent rebuilding lives here and elsewhere!!!!
We at the Peace House here in Slidell wish all of you and folks every where a holiday of good cheer and good will. In Peace ! and Caring---Niki
