Volunteering in New Orleans

I'm back home and I swear, I cannot get that experience out of my head!  I'm scraping together pennies so I can go back as soon as I can - this time for a little longer.

I got in touch with my old editor at The Key West Citizen and proposed a feature story with photos (I took quite a few!) - free of charge!  He passed on the feature saying "there probably wouldn't be too much interest."  I swear, I'm still surprised at the way people respond who've not been to NOLA.  I know normal life goes on - too bad it's still not normal for the folks in that Gulf region.  After some debate, about a column on the devastation that remains vs a "nice little feel good, everything's alright now" column, I won - kind of.  700-800 words without pictures I'm sure didn't have the effect I wanted but at least I was able to put it back out there. It ran Sunday the 8th.  You can follow this link:   http://www.keysnews.com/commentary_columns.bsp.htm then go to the bottom of the page under Guest Commentary and look for:  "A Year After Katrina, Entire Gulf Coast Neighborhoods Are Still Uninhabited."  My headline was "Out of Sight, Out of Mind - Katrina a Whole Year Later" to emphasize the time that's passed with not much done.  But it's the editor's call.

I also built a little web page and posted some of my photos.  Here's the link for that as well:  http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-livinginthelight.  I'll keep trying to get the word out whenever and wherever I can!

Keep in touch,
