Niki's Journal 1-6-06

Happy New Year to ya -- May it bring you good health and good
cheer! Thank you and Richard for your help in getting us to Buras and
Venice. The only help that seemed to be needed at the Temple in Bell
Chase was dry goods.... We were not able to get through the check point
on Sunday so we retuned Mon. Went to Venice but was not able to make
any contact there -- thats not true -- we did talk to a young lady who
ha been down here since early Sept. She is an EMT and has been hired by
the Parish. She is an incredible young women and a good resource. We
did meet with Kelly and Byron---What good people... We are bringing
them medicine cabenet type meds--you know, neosporin, tylenol, bandaids
etc.....and left them some blankets and jackets as well as some food.
There are bout 50-60 folks in Buras according to Byron. There does not
seem to much more in Venice other than those on pass to check or work
on thier boats. In between these communities---Oh My!!! There isn't
anybody because there is nothing left. This Parish is the worst hit
area I have seen so far in terms of total distruction. There is nothing
much left to repair--  -they can only rebuild---and that is only if they have the means to do
so... This is all true of Port Sulphur as well....And as you
know!!--Port Sulphur is befor the check point.... At the firestation,
there is a body from a crypt that has opened... I don't know if others
had opened as well and if the bodies are gone or had been
recovered...but this one is at the bottom of  the stairs! STILL- 6 weeks later...the athourities keep saying they
will send the proper personel to pick it up! It has been placed in a
body bag...My  God, there are so many things down here that continue to puzzel
me..Why do they not"Just Do It"! Can you imagine when or if the family
learns that this poor soul has been left lik this? Someone did set a
small decorated Christmas tree next to this persons body lying in
unrest---- As we were leaving Buras we stopp! edto talk to a family we
saw sittng in front of what appears to be the last building standing
other than the school. I should say last one that looks like it could
be repaired. Any other building that has not fallen into a pile of
rubble is so far off from its foundation and pocked with holes etc..
The widowed mother of this Family gathering is 80+ years old. Her
family has lived on this property since the 1800's. She sat quietly
with back straight and shoulders squared while tears gently flowed down
her beuatiful aged face. Were we touched? Affected by this dynamic
family??? Oh Ya!! We Sent a crew down Weds. to clear the yard and clean
out the house. What else could we do.....In Peace and Caring, niki
