Our Katrina Relief Efforts this Week

10-31-05:  Our Katrina Relief Efforts this Week: Nikki Wilson and Steve Scalomeni have been down working in Mississippi and Louisiana since the beginning of September.  Most recently they have been helping  tear out moldy walls and clean up the horrible mess left after the flooding.  They both need a rest and are now heading home.
Margaret Hayes, Steve and Nikki met with Kevin the owner of the land in Sliddel Louisiana. They came to an agreement for United Peace Relief to use the land (10 acres) for a home base for our operations in the center of the Katrina disaster area.  Margaret and Carol Stachurski, our camp Moms from Land-o-Pines in Covington are preparing to move on to the Sliddel property on November 10.  They will facilitate the development of the property for the feeding and housing of volunteers.
Polly has been in contact with Malik in Algiers and Chief Brenda of the Houma Tribe, to find out what their needs are and organize support for their efforts.  We are recruiting teams to go in to these areas and do medical and reconstruction work.
On November 21 we are sending at least 5 people from Ukiah to help out with reconstruction, medical, cleaning, and organizing.  Bob Dress, Lynn Meadows, Deborah Mead, Christina Cruz and Shannon Dress.  We are raising funds for building supplies, so we have the power to make a difference!  There are also numerous volunteers coming from all over the United States.
A van has been donated to United Peace Relief, it is located in Bellingham Washington. We are organizing the  purchase and recruiting two drivers to take it down as soon as possible.
Polly is organizing a benefit Rummage and Bake Sale on November 5 and 6 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Las Manos parking lot in Hopland, CA.
United Peace Relief is sponsoring a meeting of alternative relief organizations on November 30, in Louisiana.  We are in the final stages of confirming a location and inviting several organizations to send representatives.
Pura Vida has volunteered to do a benefit concert for United Peace Relief on January 27, 2006, in Ukiah, CA.  We will have an auction and bake sale.
