Dear friends,
Meg Perry died on December 10, 2005 in New Orleans in a freeway accident with the Frida Bus. She came from Portland, Maine to work on Katrina relief and toiled tirelessly for three months, gutting houses, clearing debris, planting a garden, recruiting volunteers and inspiring us all. She was an activist, environmentalist, communicator and great friend. She loved to read to children and went around to the schools to help with reading programs. She supported United Peace Relief by bringing her crew to us and spending a week clearing and gutting houses. She coordinated the people who volunteered to come to do Katrina relief from Maine. All of us were in shock and pain because of the loss of Meg. Our hearts go out to her family and the wonderful, young people who have worked by her side. She is our hero. We are thankful for her work and the hope that she has given to people who have suffered in the Katrina disaster. Hug your family and friends and pray that we can find a way to make sense of this huge loss. Love to everyone.

Whitehead
Dear friends,
A great friend
and Veterans For Peace volunteer passed away unexpectedly
on February 15, 2006. I spoke with Dwayne in December as I
was planning a trip to Louisiana and he was so disappointed
that he could not go due to pending surgery and finances.
Dwayne was a special man driven by the great call of
Katrina and arrived in Covington with a truckload of
supplies and ready to do whatever it took to bring help to
outlying areas. He was so knowledgeable about everything
from medical to navigation. He was so charming and
convincing, he got us through military barricades where no
one else could. After running all day, we had many deep
conversations in the evening about life, goals and always
he spoke of his children. He was warm, tender and loving as
well as determined and alert. We affectionately called him
our Navigator Man as he could look at a map once and figure
out exactly how we could reach areas no one else could get
into because of military and police blockage as well as the
great amount of debris and no road signs to indicate where
we might be. He was amazing. One day Dwayne was listening
to the radio and heard about Margaret, a lady with 22
evacuees in her home with no resources. She was pleading
for help as she had two transplant patients that needed
medicine immediately. It was Dwayne that swung into action
and connected with Lynn Meadows to get this household the
medications and supplies they so desperately
needed. I gave him $500.00 to give to Margaret so
she could hang in there until there was some semblance of
calm. His smile was as wide as the river. He was a good man
and I will miss him so.
With warmest regards,
PollyLynn
